My fiber art pieces could be called quilts – they are cut, layered and stitched together out of old fabrics – but they are far from the traditional bed coverings of the past. Each piece begins as an old sheet – it will get torn, dyed, cut, stitched and quilted – transformed. The entire process flows together – the hand-dyed background suggests a design – branches, leaves, an animal’s silhouette. The appliqued design determines where the free-motion quilting needs to go. And the heavy, intricate quilting creates movement in the background, where it all started.
