The Takeazu Studio

Featuring the work of current studio artists and Toshiko Takaezu’s former apprentices and students.
And our new gallery with a selection of Toshiko’s work, not seen for many years, from the studio collection.

Toshiko Takaezu (1922-2011), born in Hawaii of Japanese descent, worked in clay for over forty years. Her work developed steadily throughout her career as she has moved from producing functional vessels to abstract sculptural forms. Over the years she continued to draw on a combination of Eastern and Western techniques and aesthetics, as well as her love of the natural world. For Toshiko, the practice of building vessels in clay was intimately linked to everyday life.

Tucked away in Quakertown, NJ, Toshiko Takaezu’s studio continues in the tradition of welcoming ceramic artists to work in the same great space where Toshiko created some of her greatest masterpieces. Periodic open houses welcome everyone to come and view her work as well as the work of other artists who have worked at the studio.
